The gateway to our bodies

Much of the bacteria that enter our body, enter through the mouth – the location of our first defence. An imbalance in the microbiota in the mouth can lead to various other conditions.

Gingivitis – inflammation of the gums – is found in more than half of the adult population. Symptoms include irritated, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated it can progress into the gingival pockets lea- ding to periodontitis. Periodontitis is often chronic and affects a third of adults. Caries or tooth decay is also caused by the presence of bacteria called streptococci mutans, which creates a low local pH environment, demineralizing the tooth enamel. Finally, bad breath, or halitosis, can occur in episodes or more permanently and is also a result of bacterial imbalance.

The importance of a healthy mouth

Research shows a clear connection between the oral microflora and common illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The oral cavity contains around 800 different species of bacteria with more than one billion bacteria on eacht tooth.

Under normal conditions, they are in balance and work with the rest of the body. However, poor oral hygiene, unbalanced diet, stress, and other conditions can all affect the oral microflora. BioGaia Prodentis contains lactic acid bacteria to help supplement the oral microflora.
