Limosilactobacillus reuteri grounded in evolution

Around four billion years ago the earth saw the emergence of its first forms of life – bacteria. Since then, these single-cell organisms have “populated” our planet. The reason they have been able to survive for such an incredibly long time – despite dramatically varying conditions such as volcanic eruptions and ice ages – is their fantastic ability to adapt.

The bacteria that live in and on the human body continue to co-evolve with us today. Research has shown that the bacterial species Limosilactobacillus reuteri has developed with us over millions of years, leading it to adapt to its host in a successful symbiosis. Limosilactobacillus reuteri is also one of the first bacterial species to naturally establish itself in the microbiota of a newborn.

Why is Limosilactobacillus reuteri so special?

The particular strain of any probiotic bacteria determines their properties and mode of action.

As such, each probiotic strain is different. BioGaia products contain bacteria of the Limosilactobacillus reuteri species from the Limosilactobacillus reuteri family, specifically the strain Limosilactobacillus reuteri Protectis (L. reuteri DSM 17938). The human digestive tract is this strain’s natural habitat, making it particularly well-suited to thriving and developing in this area of the body. As such, Limosilactobacillus reuteri Protectis naturally supplements the intestinal flora.

Safety first – BioGaia and L. reuteri Protectis

Is L. reuteri Protectis safe? In one word: yes. Over the past years, BioGaia products have been tested in extensive safety studies with preterm babies, infants, children, healthy and immune compromised adults.

L. reuteri Protectis is also considered safe as it fulfills the following criteria: The probiotic is of human origin, it is named and classified according to correct taxonomy, it is manufactured under controlled conditions to eliminate contamination, its safety has been evaluated and documented on the target population, and it contains no toxins or transferrable antibiotic-resistant genes.

Proven and tested by the public

Of course, clinical trials have shown that BioGaia products are safe (even in very high doses exceeding those found in BioGaia products). But more importantly, over one and a half billion daily doses of BioGaia have been now consumed worldwide by the public with no reported side effects since 1996. So, we can proudly say that BioGaia products are very safe!

Gut health

Bacteria live on our skin, in our mouth and nose, but, most of all, in our gut. So, it comes as no surprise that our gut plays a significant role for the body’s immune system.

The importance of bacteria

Probiotics are good bacteria that promote a healthy gut. When in balance, the good bacteria defend our bodies against harmful bacteria. But sometimes they need support to thrive.

What are Probiotics

“Probiotics” is a general term for live microorganisms that are beneficial for the body – some even call them “friendly” bacteria. Read on for more info on these little helpers.
